From the last Olympics here are some changes to how we should all referee.

1. Referees were instructed NOT to call wasting time during the game. This rule is to be deleted at the next FINA meeting.

2. At the start of each period Referees are to stand 5 metres from the goal line to watch for breaks, pushing off and holding on to the goals. The Referee on the Table side blows for the start of play.

3. Both Referees are to assist during a Penalty shot – similar to a penalty shoot out. It is important for all referees to note the following also so as to prevent brutality or misconduct events during penalties. The referee who is on the goal line watching the goal keeper during a penalty shot should position himself/herself in such a way as to be able to see the rest of the field in case there is an incident elsewhere – referees are still responsible for the conduct of the match at all times and must be able to see the whole field.
